Car Rentals in Puerto Montt, Los Lagos Region
Puerto Montt is the capital of the Los Lagos Region and the gateway to southern Chile: ferries to Chiloé depart from there, the Carretera Austral begins there, and Puerto Varas and Lake Llanquihue are less than half an hour away. It’s one of the most popular routes in our fleet: you pick up the car in Bariloche—at the airport or downtown—and drop it off at the Puerto Montt Airport. It’s a 351-kilometer drive through the Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass, about a six-hour drive if done nonstop, although most of our customers split it into two or three days so as not to rush through the journey.
What do you encounter along the way?
- Villa La Angostura and Nahuel Huapi National Park, just before the border
- Between Lagos and Lake Puyehue, now on the Chilean side
- Osorno, and from there, Route 5 southbound
- Puerto Varas and Lake Llanquihue, with the Osorno Volcano in the background
- Frutillar, and the ferry to Chiloé from Pargua

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pick up the car in Puerto Montt?
Today we're operating the Argentina–Chile route: pick-up is in Bariloche and drop-off is in Puerto Montt. If you need the reverse route, please contact us and we'll review it based on availability.
What documents do I need to cross the border?
A valid ID or passport, a valid driver's license, and authorization from the company that owns the vehicle, which we issue. Request it in advance: it’s a notarial procedure that takes several business days, and without that document, Customs will not authorize you to cross the border.
How long does it take to get from Bariloche to Puerto Montt?
It's 351 km and about a six-hour drive. During peak season, it's a good idea to factor in the wait at the pass.
Does the insurance provide coverage in Chile?
Yes. Valid coverage in Chile is included along with authorization to leave the country.
Can I leave the car in another city in Chile?
Contact us. Today's coordinated return is at the Puerto Montt Airport (PMC).
